DIY Valentines Wood Heart Garland

Add a cute but classic touch to your Valentine’s Day decor, or even your all-year-round decor, with this simple DIY wood garland of hearts made from dollar store finds.

Living in a house full of boys means that I don’t often get the chance to decorate with a lot of pink. Blue is overwhelmingly the favourite colour of everyone in this family, and blues and greens are the main colours we gravitate to in our decor.  But each year as February approaches I start feeling the itch for a little bit of pink.

Perhaps it’s because I’m tired of all the grey and brown outside and am aching for some fresh spring colour. Even a few touches of warmer tones can add create a new feel in your home, as can the addition of cozy natural materials, like wood. This week I whipped up a simple and adorable wood garland made with some pretty cut-out hearts that I found at my local Dollar Tree.

With the current supply chain issues due to COVID, I have found myself getting more and more creative when it comes to my little DIYs and projects, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s taking me back to my roots, back when I first started blogging, when I loved the challenge of searching out thrift store or dollar store items that I could upgrade and customize to add a unique touch to my seasonal decor.

Wooden Hearts

I found these pretty wooden cutout hearts at The Dollar Tree and knew they would be a perfect addition to my somewhat neutral Valentine’s Day decor additions. I used the small pieces of twine that they came with, along with a large ball of twine that I had on hand as the base for the garland. The only other supply I needed was my scissors!

I tied a piece of the twine that the hearts came with through the hole that was cut in each of them, and knotted it once at the back.

I then attached these by tying them onto a long piece of the thicker twine that I had cut as the base of the garland.

I used a piece of 4″ wide painters tape stuck to my counter to keep them evenly spaced apart as I tied them on, and then just cut off the extra thin bit of twine at the back of each heart.

I think this seasonal garland turned out really cute, and doesn’t look like a dollar store project at all!

I’m also really excited about the chance to style this new-to-me FB Marketplace find hutch that I just finished painting for our dining room!
