Summer Living Room Decor

Simple ideas for summer living room decor and tips for how to decorate your living room in the summer.

We’re counting down the last few days of school around here, which means that summer is truly right around the corner. Although we are still waiting for our summery weather to arrive, the last couple of days have been nicer and the sun is definitely a balm for the soul during this hectic time of year. Although I’m usually pretty excited to add some summer living room decor, this year I wanted to keep things fairly similar to how they were in the spring, I did make one big change though; a new feature colour for summer; terracotta! Well, I guess truthfully it’s a few versions of terracotta tones, some of which are more peachy than anything, but overall it feels fresh and bright for the season ahead. I love the warmth is adds to our space!

How to decorate your living room for summer:

1)Use a summer inspired colour scheme or add pops of summery colour

As I mentioned, I decided to bring in some peachy and terracotta tones for this summer season, and these compliment the greens and dark teal that I already had running through our living/dining/kitchen great room. This image gives you a good idea of the scheme I was going for.

I think we are all craving a bit of sun-baked desert in our house after a very cool and wet spring season.

2)Vases and greenery or florals

As I’ve mentioned my past few tours, I’ve gotten away from buying a lot of new decor for each season. Instead I shop the house and repurpose what I have, mix in some fresh greenery or florals, and make something new from some thrift store or dollar store finds.

These peachy-terracotta tones vases are my new DIY for the summer season; I shared the tutorial for making these faux terracotta vases from thrift store finds in this article.

To change my vases up for the season, I just filled them with greenery that I already owned. I’ve mentioned before that I like to collect good quality florals and greenery and store them in totes when I’m not using them. That way I have a selection of things to switch around to give our home a fresh look each season, without always heading off to buy new stuff.

I shared our summer mantel decor last week in this article. It definitely goes along with our summer colour scheme.    The green vases, below, have had a place on our mantel for several months now. With a few greenery and floral changes they switch from season to season with ease.

I also carried the scheme through in our pillows (some of which are the same ones I shared in my spring tour), and in the hydrangeas (faux) that I featured on our coffee table. The green/blue hydrangeas were a Michael’s purchase several years back, and the terracotta toned ones were actually a Walmart find this past spring. I love how the flowers reinforce and connect with the colour scheme created through the textiles in this room. Repeating elements like colour brings balance and unity to your home.

3)Terracotta

There is something that always feels super summery about terracotta. I especially love aged terracotta these days. It’s really quick and easy to give terracotta pots and vases that you already own an aged finish with a little bit of paint! Read my article about making your own faux terracotta vases here, or how to age terracotta pots here.

4)Fresh pillows and textiles

Switching up your pillows and textiles is always really refreshing and immediately makes a huge difference in your space. I added in two new light clay lumbar pillows (from Urban Barn) on our accent chairs, along with a crisp terracotta linen style pillow on our sofa (HomeSense find).  Once again, the repetition of this warm colour helps create that sense of unity in the space. These colours are also all present in our large area rug. It’s a Loloi Rug – Hathaway Multi/Ivory.

My favourite pillow might be the really long lumbar one that is featured on our Cleo Rattan Sofa, though, as it ties tighter all the colours that I’m loving for our summer living room decor.

5)Include lots of natural textures

Natural textures scream summer to me, as they are often so present in all parts of coastal design. Wicker, jute, rattan, wood, driftwood, all create that feel that reminds us of beach days and sunshine.

6)Summer inspired artwork – free printable summer art

I added in a new piece on our Frame TV (available here through Etsy), but also came up with a new printable for the vignette above our bookcase. I’ll be adding this summer watercolour landscape to my free printable library really soon (which is available for all my email subscribers).

Well, that’s it!

Now that the sun is finally starting to peak out, I’m getting excited about freshening up our outdoor living space for the season ahead. I’ll be back next week to share my outdoor decorating tips and our outdoor living room with you all!

Want to remember this? PIN It for later!
