Mood Board Monday: Inspiration for a Fabulous Little Girl’s Room

This week’s inspiration board is for the daughter of a good friend of mine.

I am so excited to help her design her six year old daughter’s bedroom.

With two little boys in our house it is a treat to get to decorate with pink and purple and all things feminine and pretty!

inspiration for a little girls room

My friend, Samantha, has several concerns with her six year old daughter’s room and has asked me to help her pull it together. First of all, she wants to sort through and purge it because she thinks it is filled with excess and unused toys, books, and clothes. She then wants to organize it so that everything left after the purge has a place in the room. This will allow her daughter to keep it tidier and more organized without Mom’s help 🙂 . Lastly, Samantha really wants to add some life and pizzazz to this boring, cluttered, and uninspired space. She wants it to be a fun, cozy space for her growing little girl to enjoy playing, reading, and sleeping in. She sent me these before pictures:

I suggested several things….

Nevaeh's inspiration board

1) Make some simple bunting banners to drape up in the room, likely across the valance box above her window. Source Etsy. Also make paper pinwheels to attach to the wall in a pretty display like these ones created by Kelly from View Along the Way.

2) Layer the bed with simple washable bedding in a neutral white supplemented with colourful pillows and a pair of pretty quilts or blankets folded at the bottom of the bed.

3) DIY a piece of pallet art like this one from The Happy Scraps, perhaps a variation that includes a favourite verse or quote. Use the same kind of technique I did for my DIY Reclaimed Wood Sign project.

4) Create a fabric covered bulletin board for Nevaeh to display her artwork and schoolwork. Source Etsy. The fabrics are Premier Prints Gotcha Candy Pink and White and Premier Prints Chipper Candy Pink and White both from Fabric.com

5) Upcycle an old dresser by refreshing with a new coat of warm white paint.

6) Add some pizzazz to the nightstand by painting it in a vivid pink and stencilling on some flowers (or butterflies) in fresh white.

7)  Create a gallery wall incorporating some fun repainted vintage frames in bright pretty colours like these ones. Source Etsy

8)  Add flower and butterfly paper embellishments to a simple white lantern and hang it as the light fixture.

Other suggestions:

  • Keep the same light purple paint colour – it is a very pretty soft colour and will work well with the brighter accent colours.
  • Consider looking for a small desk to use in the space, something that could be updated with a few coats of chalk paint.
  • Look for a rug to use in the space or create a DIY stenciled rug – perhaps in a chevron pattern.

Have you been decorating any children’s rooms lately? What would you add to a six year old girls room that I didn’t think of?? Maybe I am out of practice given that I usually only get to decorate for my house full of boys!

Thanks for reading!
And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey!

  1. It’s going to be one fabulous little girl’s room!!! Can’t wait to see it!!! We’ll get to see after photos… right?? 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing this at The DIY Dreamer! See you tomorrow evening! 🙂

    1. I think so Christine – after photos should be on their way but it may take a few months for her to pull it all together!! The fabric is on order already:) Thanks for always hosting!

    1. Thanks Jamie! It is one thing I can do for my friends and they do so much for me… so I love sharing what I can:) I hope the room can come together so that Nevaeh loves it!

  2. This is beautiful. I’m planning on redoing my little girls room too. She is 4 and I haven’t quite removed all the nursery items (I still have the changetable top on the chest of drawers). This is wonderful inspiration for me.

    1. Hi Jane! So glad to hear you found some inspiration! Wish I had my own little girl’s room to decorate…but at least I can help out my friends with theirs! (I have two beautiful healthy little boys so I am not complaining!! Just nice to pick out some pretty and pink things for a change from navy and blue…)

  3. I love what you’ve picked out for the room Krista! (no surprise there! 😉 ) It’s going to be fabulous…and Nevaeh…what a gorgeous name too 🙂

  4. so pretty, so girlie! I’m sure this room will be a space I always dreamed of having as a kid and even now! I understand you; with a boy and a nephew I wish I could have a little girl to decorate for! 🙂 love today’s mood board; the fabric for the bulletin board is beautiful & the colors of the frames for the gallery wall are feminine and very pretty! 🙂 & #8 is an excellent idea too! 🙂 I’m sure this little girl will be in love with her room! 🙂

  5. Cute ideas! I think you inspired another project. My daughter has my old old old dresser (with the coolest hand made knobs – via me in Art School) but it’s a drab off white – I am thinking a punch of bright sunny yellow (like that bed side table in your board) with some embellishments would be just the ticket! (darn you!! you owe me a can of paint 😉 )

  6. I love it and I can’t wait. I showed Nevaeh the board and she is very excited, bordering on nagging…:)

  7. Hey Krista! Love that pinwheel idea. I am just finishing up my 7-year-old daughter’s room and we have one wall in which we still need to decorate. These 3D pinwheels will be perfect! Thanks for sharing!
