Tone-on-Tone Coral & Gold Distressed Nightstand Makeover

So I only promised that I would share the details about this nightstand about three months ago.

That’s not too far behind, is it?

Maybe ridiculously behind? Ya, okay. That’s fair.

The truth is that I almost forgot about them…until I was repainting our bedroom the other day and I remembered that I haven’t even shared my nightstand tutorial with you!

So, without further delay… here it is: our tone-on-tone coral & gold distressed nightstand makeover. The finishing touch for this piece is gold wax and gold hardware!

We have had these nightstands for many years…I found them on the side of the road a few years ago and grabbed them ASAP. They were originally refinished in a tomato red color with black hardware, but with recent changes to our master bedroom colour scheme it was time for a change.

Coral & Gold has been calling my name and I found all kinds of inspiration in the fabric I chose for a pillow in our bedroom and in the beautiful coral banded bedding that I got from Crane and Canopy….

I started out by doing a base coat in Country Chic Paint’s Sweet Dreams…

Once dry the Sweet Dreams was top coated with Full Bloom (the darker coral shown above). It is such a glorious coral colour…I absolutely love it! I painted the whole piece quickly with the Full Bloom and then went back and immediately distressed it with a damp rag….

Isn’t the contrast so soft and beautiful?? You might not normally think to distress with tone-on-tone types of color combos but I absolutely love the effect.

Once the nightstands had fully dried I top coated them with some Gold Wax…

You can really see the difference after putting on the Gold Wax- it brings out such a richness in the paint…

I let it dry for a while in hopes of keeping as much of that rich look as possible and then buffed it off gently with a dry clean cloth… I find the gold wax takes quite a while to dry and you really need to buff it after to remove the stickiness.

Lastly, I freshened up our old blackish hardware with some gold spray paint.

Done!

I love how it looks in our bedroom! Especially against the board and batten and the reupholstered headboard. All easy and thrifty changes but together it looks like a completely different space…

  1. Hello! I just came across you blog after searching for more pieces using the gold wax. Is it gold or yellow? It looks more like yellow which is what I’m hoping for.
    Thanks,
    Sonya

  2. I love what you did with your dresser. I have a brown dresser that I’m very tired of and that’s exactly what I want to do with mine. Thanks for giving me the courage to try!!!!! Love the night stand too!!

    1. Hello Barbara, I couldn’t be happier with how the dresser turned out – and I love the nightstands as well!! Thanks for your kind comments and visit!

      1. I LOVE those exact colors of paint, but looking carefully through the paint colors, I cannot find the SWEET DREAMS. The coral was there, but not the gold. Do they still make that color? And where can I get the gold wax. I may have missed it on the finishes page, but looked all over for the Sweet Dreams. Can you let me know please? I’m a new follower.
        Thanks,
        Pam Prestridge

      2. Hi Pam,
I looked and can not see Sweet Dreams listed anywhere either – maybe it no longer exists.

The gold wax is listed, though, on their Wax page.

        Hope that helps at little.

  3. Funny how a subtle change in shade can make such a big difference. The new nightstand is beyond pretty. If you’re looking for another place to share your projects, stop by Etcetorize and join our Make it Monday party. (There’s a giveaway for linked up entries.)

  4. I love the tone on tone and one of my favorite colors is coral. I wasn’t familiar with the gold wax, good to know. The room looks great! But maybe your pink flower should get switched out for a coral one, hmmm? Love the white dresser and turquoise lamp.

  5. This night table is GORGEOUS!! I love those colors together, perfect compliment! And the gold wax really does bring out the colors even more! Great job! 🙂

  6. I love what you have done, It looks amazing!! That gold wax!!! Who is it by? Where are your poppy prints from? Love those too!! Well I love everything 🙂
