DIY Golf Sign for Father’s Day {and Father’s Day Project Blog Hop}

Good Morning! I have a special DIY Golf Sign for Father’s Day to share with you today… Father’s Day is only a couple of weeks away and my wheels have been turning about what to do or make. This particular sign was made for my Dad (not my husband… though he has been known to enjoy the odd golf match himself)… because my Dad is an avid golfer and would literally go daily if he could get away with it.

 The special thing about this sign is that I made it out of an old cabinet door that my Dad actually made for my parent’s kitchen but ended up not using – he built all the cabinets (boxes included!) in my their entire kitchen…and I got a couple of leftover doors out of it. So why not recycle one back into a gift for him?!?

I started out with a cabinet door and some craft paint in white (and, not pictured, black).

After a couple of coats of white I used my pencil transfer technique (detailed here) to transfer the printed out lettering onto my cabinet door sign….

Using this technique, you can see the faint outline of the lettering below… but it is definitely enough to guide your painting.

I filled in the lettering with a fine tipped craft brush and my black craft paint…

It was looking pretty stark so I wanted to add some character and age (like my Dad has:-). To age it I first sanded it to distress the edges and lighten/distress the lettering.

Then I waxed with dark wax or antiquing wax – this goes on REALLY dark at first.

I buffed the wax off with a dry lint free cloth…

And it felt a little bit heavier then I wanted, so I used some clear wax to help me lighten it up. The trick is, if you add too much dark wax, just add some clear wax over top and that will help remove some of the dark wax. I buffed it off again…

I like that the sanding and dark wax added dimension to the white painted door that wasn’t there before- it shows the amazing ridges of this handmade cabinet door (he is quite a talented cabinet maker, isn’t he?!?).

Today I am taking part in my Monthly Craft Blog Hop (first Wednesday of each month) with these talented blogging gals- check out these awesome Father’s Day project ideas!! I know I can’t wait to visit them – I still haven’t figured out what we should do for my husband yet!
