DIY Child’s Silhouette Tea Towel {Mom’s Day Gift Idea Hop!}

Can you believe that it is May 1 today and that Mother’s Day is just around the corner?

Frankly, I can’t!

This has been a busy and productive 2015 so far, between renovating the rental property, our family holiday in March, and then working on finishing off the kitchen and the craft room this past month. I am so excited that we are “almost there” on both those projects.

And I’m even more excited about my own personal Mother’s Day gift this year from “my boys”! I am going away to a Spa for a night with a couple of close girlfriends. Is there something inherently wrong about leaving your children behind to go and celebrate Mother’s Day?

Maybe don’t answer that!

In actuality I will be home for the “real” Mom’s day – and, even though I am a Mother now, I am still responsible for Mother’s Day gift ideas for my Mom and my Mother-in-Law. They are both amazing women and deserve some recognition for that amazing-ness.

I love to give them something cute from the boys, and I thought that these little DIY Child’s Silhouette Tea Towels would be an adorable way to give them a little reminder of their adorable grand babies even when they aren’t around messing up their houses.

Today I am sharing my Mother’s Day Gift Idea as part of a blog hop with some of my favourite fellow-Canuck bloggers. Take a look at what they have come up with to help celebrate Mom… (links are at the bottom of the post).

Handmade Mother's Day Gift Ideas

To  make this simple DIY Child’s Silhouette Tea Towel, I used some bar mop towels that I picked up at Walmart, printed images of my boy’s side profile, scissors, a pencil, a Sharpie laundry marker, and a large Tulip Paint pen. If I were to redo this project I think I would prefer to use fabric paint and a brush rather then the paint pen as it took a few coats to get decent coverage. But as I live in a town without a single craft store, I had to make do with the one fabric pen I was able to find at Walmart.

I ironed the tea towels first to, obviously, remove the wrinkles…

Then I cut out each boys face…

I folded the towels into neat thirds, and then laid out the silhouette cut outs…

I used a mechanical pencil and it wasn’t great. I would use a regular ol’ HB if you have one… I think the thicker end would work a little better.

Before using my slightly-less-then-successful paint pen I put some layers of scrap paper between the outline and the rest of the towel so the paint wouldn’t bleed all the way through it.

Third this-craft-was-almost-a-failure tip:  Outline the silhouette first with a thinner marker. I used a Sharpie laundry marker that I had on hand to go around the pencil outline, and then filled the whole shape in with my Tulip fabric marker. As I said, I think I would have preferred a fabric paint (or black craft paint with fabric medium). Next time…

It took a few coats to get a decent level of “black”. These would also be adorable in another colour if you had access to a store with a better selection of fabric paints or fabric markers. The nearest Michaels is an hour away and I am itchin’ to get there soon. Can you tell?

I think it still turned out pretty adorably though, don’t you?

    1. We aren’t usually that gifty on Mother’s Day either- I do give something small to my Mom and Mother-in-law usually, but the hubs isn’t one for shopping so the boys usually make me something. I am fine with that, too!

  5. What a nice gift idea for Mom! I love gifts that freeze kids and their ages in time…they grow up so fast, so it’s always nice to have a reminder of how little they were!

    1. So true Jo-Anna. I wish I had done more of those “freeze in time” projects when my boys were a little smaller- it is crazy how fast it goes and all of a sudden those baby hands that you meant to do a cast of grow into big school-kid hands… I suppose I could still do it before they become big teenager hands!

  6. SUCH a neat idea Krista!!! I’m always on the hunt for the perfect handmade gift for the Grandmas and I think I’ve found this year’s! LOVE it! And enjoy your spa day, lucky girl!!!

    1. Thanks Kristi! I really want to try this again with fabric paint in a colour- I like how it turned out, but I’m just not a black-and-white girl! I’m heading off this morning, can’t wait for a little R&R!
