DIY Wall Treatments:

We did two types of wall treatments in our boys’ bedroom – a DIY Planked Wall, and then painted stripes around the top portion of the other walls. I didn’t share a tutorial on our painted stripes, as there are so many tutorials already available, but I did share a DIY tutorial on the Planked Wall:

DIY Furniture Makeovers:

I did three major furniture makeovers for this project, all with chalk paint: a FLAG design dresser (the flag of Iceland which is part of our heritage); a nautical numbered dresser; and a striped (grainsack inspired} nightstand.

DIY Storage Solutions:

My boys have a lot of stuff. A lot of stuff to pack into one relatively small bedroom. This meant we needed to come up with some creative storage solutions. I have always loved displaying books; I think that it makes children so much more likely to pick them up and “read” them when they are readily available, so my Dad built these DIY PB Kid’s Knockoff Book Display Shelves for above each of their beds.

Of course, not all of their books can fit in these – especially some of the thicker and heavier volumes. We do have a book shelf, but I also turned a basic crate into an interesting book storage piece using some red, white, and blue chalk paint. This rustic painted crate doesn’t have to be for books – it would be great for small toy storage as well.

And finally, LEGO. I shared the tutorial for this DIY Under Bed Rolling Lego Storage Cart just yesterday!

DIY Lighting Solutions:

Lighting! Such a fun element. I knew that I wanted some sort of industrial or nautical style sconces for the boys’ bedroom, so I was stoked when I came across some cage style plug in lights on clearance at Target! {Isn’t Target awesome-  I’m so sad about losing it in Canada}… The DIY for these Cage Lantern Light Fixtures was giving them a new colour and figuring out a way to hang them!

I also gave their desk lamp a nautical flair with some jute rope to create this DIY Rope Wrapped Nautical Lamp.

DIY Wall Decor:

To finish off the decor in the boys’ room I did a few DIY projects. I did another PB Kids Knockoff with this striped oar decor.

I also made a Canada Flag Pallet Sign and hung it on a dock cleat…

Put together some simple nautical chart art

As well as the chart art, I made some cute map/chart covered monogram letters for the boys’ bedroom.

I created a little display style storage with these easy DIY Fabric Covered cork boards using picture frames….

And dressed up the inside of their closet with this Faux Map Wallpaper.

Of course, what room would be complete without a DIY Envelope Pillow or two? I made a couple of chevron lumbar envelope pillows as the finishing touch for our boys’ beds…

Now the question of the hour is….

  2. Are you kidding?! If THAT room on THAT budget isn’t bargain basement, I don’t know what is.
