Rustic Glam Heart String Art {Valentines Project… or not}

This adorable heart string art is perfect for Valentine’s Day or any other day!

Does Valentine’s Day pull at your heart strings? That is what it is supposed to be all about, right? Love and caring and giving and sharing (etc etc. you get the idea.). Well, I figure if it is all about pulling at our heart strings then this easy Rustic Glam Heart String Art is a perfect nod to the big ol’ V-day.

But pink and sparkly and nails and jute twine? Together? Really?

Ah, why not? The contrast makes it interesting, am I right?

I have wanted to try out some string art since reading this great tutorial by Corey from Tiny Sidekick back in the fall. And with Valentines approaching I thought this was the perfect time to try out a simple DIY string art project.

To make this you need:

– a piece of wood (I used a scrap piece of 2×4 that measures about 4×4 inches square)
– scrapbook paper and decoupage medium (I used Martha Stewart Crafts sparkly decoupage medium)
– white paint for the edges of the wood (I used Martha Stewart Multi Surface paint in Wedding Cake)
– scissors, paint brush, paper to create a heart shape, small nails, and a hammer

Rustic Glam Heart String Art How to Collage of the tutorial.

Start by painting the edges of the piece of wood. Once dry, use your decoupage medium to attach the scrapbook paper to the face of the wood. Use another layer of the decoupage medium on top to seal it all on. The sparkly medium I used created a subtle but pretty sparkly sheen. Once dry, fold some cardstock in half to cut out a heart shape. Place it on your board and add nails all around the edges – about 1/2 inch apart. Once all your nails are in, you can remove the template and tie the twine (or string) onto one of the nails using a simple slip knot. I wrapped my way around the edges of the heart shape first to create some definition, then simply started crossing back and forth and looping the twine around the nails as I went. I had to push the twine down on the nails a few times but it went really quickly and was easy to do. After I felt it was ‘full’ enough I did one final wrap all the way around the edges again, and then tied it off back at the beginning point.

Done!

It is such a cute little piece that adds a cheery {Valentine’s Day} touch to our entry hall without being over the top.

Plus, I love that it isn’t limited to Valentine’s Day –  I think it would be a perfect piece for a cute little girl’s bedroom. I think that I just may pass it along to my young niece for her bedroom…after February 14th of course.

Have you been up to any Valentines Day crafts or projects?

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

    1. Hi Mary Beth! I got that little blue shelf at the dollar store a couple of years ago! The string art is really easy and fun- you’ve got to give it a go! Thanks for your visit:)

  1. This is such an awesome mix of the rustic vibe but with a perfect pop of bright color, I really love it. I’ve been wanting to try out some string artwork and you make it look so easy… maybe I will. PS- I adore your entry way!! That blue shelf is amazing.

    1. Thank you Sonnet! I was super excited to give string art a try as well – it is actually pretty easy (Corey inspired me!). And the blue shelf was a dollar store find a couple of years ago – I love it too!

    1. Hi Corey! I think the rustic twine tones down my crazy bright paper a little (though I love that paper…wish I had a little more opportunity to use pink!). Thanks for your visit and comments!!

  2. I love it! I have been wanting to try some string art for awhile too and the mix of rustic twine and pink sparkle gives the perfect contrast!

    1. Thanks Carrie- I am glad I finally gave the string art a go. A shape like this was really easy- a word would be a little trickier but I love the look of it. Good luck with your project if you give it a go- can’t wait to see what you would do!

    1. Thank you Anne:) I was going to do a word but it turned out a little more complicated then I wanted…so take two was quick and easy and I love it (so will me niece when I give it to her after V-day!).

  3. This is SO adorable! I’ve been wanting to try string art for a while, but I can’t decide on a shape. Isn’t that lame? Recently I’ve been thinking of doing a word, but I don’t know. I really love what you’ve created here. It’s a super-cute little decoration or valentine.

    1. I think a word would be fab Tricia- but choose thick enough font that it is easy to space the nails out. I was going to do a word originally but picked a script that made nailing really tricky so I quickly abandoned it and went with a simple heart. I am all about quick and easy!

    1. Thanks Diana! I love that pink paper- wish I got to use a little more pink around here… but my niece will surely appreciate it after V-day:)
