Peppermint Sparkle Playdough {and Kleenex} for Weathering a Sick Day

 untitled

With winter weather has arrived runny noses in triplicate- in fact both my boys and I have been fighting a cold all weekend. Days can feel pretty long when you are stuck in the house and Moms need a solution that doesn’t involve too much TV or tech time. To keep us busy when we are home with a cold, I love to involve the boys in making some homemade play dough – and in honour of the Christmas season we decided to make some Peppermint (scented) sparkle play dough to keep us busy this weekend.

To make this Peppermint Sparkle Play Dough you will need:

Peppermint Sparkle Playdough ingredients at The Happy Housie

-2 cups flour
-1 cup salt
– 3 tbsp. Cream of Tartar
-5 tbsp. Oil
-2 cups water
-1 or 2 tbsp. of peppermint extract
– 1-2 tbsp. of food coloring
– sparkles

Blend together the flour, salt, cream of tartar. Add the oil, water, peppermint extract, food coloring and sparkles. Blend thoroughly with a whisk until there are no lumps in the mix, then heat over medium heat on the stovetop, stirring continually. It is ready when it forms into a lump and the runniness is all gone. Remove from the heat and let it cool.

My boys’ love to be involved in the whole process… but with runny noses rampant this weekend I made sure to keep the Kleenex handy to ensure that our beautiful play dough wasn’t sabotaged with germs. In fact, we keep a box in both the kitchen and the bathroom these days.

Once the play dough has has cooled it is ready to go- a perfect quiet, calm form of amusement for a sick day….

The fresh peppermint scent even helps clear up your sinuses – but keep the Kleenex nearby to avoid any mishaps:)

I picked my 4 pack of Kleenex up at Target- and you can click here to get a $1 off coupon to use on your own 4-pack or larger Kleenex from Target- just in time for some serious runny nose season.

Do you have any fun crafts or activities that you do with your kids when they are sick? I would love the hear about them!

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey!

    1. It is a great recipe – if it starts to dry out at all just rub a touch more oil into it. I got the recipe from an Early Childhood educator and I use the same one for my Kindergarten classroom. During the rest of the year you can leave out the peppermint extract and food coloring and use two packages of Koolaid mix instead to give it the color and a fun scent!

    1. LOL- thanks for pointing that out Nikita – I see I talked about water in the instructions but not in the ingredient amounts. I seriously had a runny nose and head cold when I wrote this so I am glad you noticed that!! Fixed:) 2 cups.
