Pastel & Gold Spring Mantel and a Balsam Hill Giveaway
This pastel & gold spring mantel might just be my favourite mantel yet. Or do I say that every time?
I find so much joy in putting together my mantelscapes. I love combining different elements in a new and creative way (most of the time I ‘shop my house’ for items on our mantels). I get my creativity and artistic side from my Mom. She loves art, design, decorating, gardening, and sewing, and has passed these interests onto me. She also passed a DIY-ing spirit on to me, as I shared here.
My Mom might laugh that I created a pastel and gold spring mantel. In my earlier years I couldn’t stand most pastels (THINK: pastel peach and green in the early 90’s)… and I couldn’t stand gold. Amazing how perspectives change over time.
When I was mulling over this mantel design and choosing pieces for it, I was so excited to have this Balsam Hill English Boxwood Wreath as the focal point.
See the chalkboard behind it? I made that specifically to be a perfect background for my beautiful new Boxwood Wreath. I knew that the gorgeous greenery of the wreath would stand out perfectly against the black. (I made it out of a $2 yard sale framed print… more on that to come soon). I couldn’t even make myself ‘condition’ the chalkboard because I love how crisp the wreath looks against the black.
And those pastel books? I just wrapped some hardcovers in pretty pastel scrapbook paper. The horse bookend was a garage sale find last season… it used to be a spectacularly ugly mottled brown. Nothin’ a little white spray paint couldn’t cure.
My other favourite pieces, aside from the wreath, are those stunning Gold Antlers and the Gold Lucky Horseshoe. I purchased both of them from a fabulous Etsy shop called Juxtaposition. Not only was I incredibly impressed with their quality, but the owner was so nice and accommodating and got my products shipped off to me early so that I could get them in time for my spring mantel. Gotta love service like that!
The blue jug was once a bath salts canister that I spray painted “Bahama Sea”, and I got the little decorative moss ball on clearance at Michael’s at the end of last summer. The gold frame was an “as is” clearance purchase at Home Sense – $6 instead of $12. I do love a deal.
You may have seen my post the other day about my almost-craft-fail-pink-and-gold-mason-jars incident…. here they are. Painted with Cherry Blossom Country Chic Chalk Paint and finished with gold wax. Oh ya, and that undercoat of gold that didn’t quite work… almost a craft fail.
Another love my Mother passed onto me is my love of flowers- aren’t these pink peonies stunning? Now I have to confess to you that they aren’t real (mine haven’t bloomed quite yet…). I got them on clearance at the end of last summer at The Real Canadian Superstore. They were less then $3 a stem – which is an amazing price for high quality realistic looking flowers. I hate to even confess it to you because I think they can totally pass for real. Could you tell??
What do you think? Are you diggin’ the pastels and gold?
Pin it to remember it!
And since this Spring Mantel has a Mother’s Day feel to it (at least for me)… it makes me reflect upon my own roll as a Mother as well as the blessings that I have received by being the daughter of my own Mother.
In fact, Balsam Hill shared a little interview with me in honour of Mother’s Day. Hop over here to read it!
I must say that being a mother myself has certainly changed my perspective on my relationship with my own mother… kind of gives you a whole new understanding of who I am, as a daughter, in her eyes.
This Mother’s Day, I’m so thankful for my Mom,
And so thankful to be a Mom.
The best thing about all this is that Balsam Hill is offering all of you lovely readers the opportunity to win your own beautiful Balsam Hill wreath as well as a $100 Gift Card for Etsy – so that you can create your own special spring vignette!! I can totally relate to the fact that you hated pastels via the 90’s. I’m right there with you. I’m just getting my head around the fact that all those colors are back in and can look beautiful in my home if I just give them a chance! Your pink and gold combinations look fantastic! Love it! Thanks for inspiring me. 🙂
Thank you Heidi!! Sometimes if you have had a really strong aversion… it can take a little while for a color to grow on you (I was like that with gold… but now I love it -so crazy!!). Thanks for coming by:)
