DIY {Gift Idea} Gold Decoupaged Succulent Mug Planters

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Blue Print Social for Martha Stewart Crafts by Plaid. All opinions are 100% mine.
Hello everyone! Now that November is in full swing I am beginning to think about Christmas already (as are many of you, if Pinterest is any indication)… I have started on a few Christmas crafts already, and this weekend I created these beautiful little gold decoupaged mug planters using some fabulous products from  Martha Stewart Crafts . I just love how they turned out and think that they would be a perfect holiday gift to give to friends and coworkers this coming holiday season.

To create these I used:

  • Martha Stewart Decoupage Multi-Surface Durable Matte Finish
  • Martha Stewart Decoupage paper doilies
  • Martha Stewart Decoupage metallic trim
  • a craft paint brush
  • scissors and a small paper cutter (optional)
  • 3 plain white mugs from the Dollar Tree
  • 3 small indoor plants (1 asparagus fern and 2 succulents)

I started by preparing my doilies to be decoupaged by deciding where I would place them and cutting them to fit that spot on each mug. Where the mug curved at the bottom I used my finger to create a line to follow with my scissors.

For cutting the straight lines I used my little paper cutter to do the job…

To adhere them using the Martha Stewart Decoupage medium I first painted a layer of the medium on the mug as well as on the back of the doily. IMG_0026

I then placed the doily onto the mug, carefully smoothing out any bubbles with my fingers. I followed that with a layer of  decoupage medium over the outside of the doily.

I let it dry, and then repeated with another coat of the decoupage finish. I again let it dry and followed up with a third and final coat of the decoupage medium.

Once the whole thing was completely dry I planted my little succulents and asparagus fern in the mugs. I used a layer of gravel in the bottom to provide a little drainage since the mugs don’t have any drain holes in them – I would be careful not to overwater these (succulents require minimal water so work well with this kind of potting).

Done! Quick, easy, and beautiful.

The decoupage medium was so easy to work with and completing this project took such a small amount of product that I have a ton left over for future decoupage action.

I was also super thrilled to learn that, just like with the Martha Stewart glass paints, the decoupage finish is dishwasher safe (top rack). Isn’t that amazing!! Once I read that fact a whole new world of possibilities opened up for me.

I loved using the decoupage materials but also have been experimenting with glass paint and I can’t wait to show you what I have created with it!

  1. Ok, so I’ve been wanting to buy some succulents to have around the house and this cute little project really seals the deal for me. I love everything about it. The freshness of the succulents paired with the crisp gold color. Great job! If you get the chance, I’d love for you to share your winter/Christmas-inspired posts over at The Merriest Blog Hop. Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Hi Stacia- I know, for the most part there are very few bubbles. I am always concerned about that when decoupaging. I worked to smooth it out and did a few coats over top, smoothing…smoothing… and it worked pretty well. I have had some serious decoupage fails so I was glad!

    1. Me neither Thalita until the box of goods arrived at my house… it was fun to work with the different projects and took a lot of thinking to figure out what exactly to create. I am happy with how these came out:)

    1. Isn’t that crazy- who would have thought they would make decoupage medium that is dishwasher safe! Amazing! Thanks so much for your visit and comments Kim!!

  4. These are stunning! You did an excellent job, that is for sure. Is there any drainage for the plants? Regardless, I love the look and want some for myself! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you Amy! I added some gravel/rocks at the bottom to allow for some drainage because the mugs don’t have any holes in them (and I didn’t feel prepared to take on drilling out holes…). I figure that succulents need very little water so am hoping it will be successful to use the gravel for drainage!! Thanks so much for your sweet comments!!
