Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!! A Fall Table and Family Photos

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everyone!

Today is a holiday here in Canada and we get to enjoy a day off from our regularly scheduled programming. Last night we had a big family Thanksgiving dinner here with sixteen bodies, large and small. It was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day so we decided to set up our Thanksgiving table outside on the deck (we got to do this last year as well!)

I’m pretty thrilled about that green pumpkin… it is made of little thin pieces of wood rolled up and would be a gorgeous DIY project. But I got it on Clearance on Friday at Homesense ($15… I think that is a steal!). Super creative!

Unfortunately it started to cool down significantly before it was time to actually eat and on account of our 91 year old Great Grandpa we decided to move things inside…. (last year it was so warm we actually got to eat outdoors!!)  I think that the nicest part of the evening was when my five year old insisted that we each go around the table sharing what we are thankful for… he chose “life, God, and my family”. That about sums it up:)

We were also so grateful that our brother-in-law came over with his amazing camera and fabulous photography skills and took some lovely family pictures for us…(as well as some of those table shots). I so want a great camera!!

Yes I realize that my youngest has his tongue out… but this was still the best family shot we could get… the “shoot” didn’t last very long because our oldest wasn’t a big fan of the sweater that Mom made them wear (I have been holding onto these sweaters for years waiting for them to be old enough to wear them in a matching picture…lol. I swear I will get one more photo shoot out of them for Christmas).

No tongue this time…but maybe not quite as cute without it??

Aaron and I Thanksgiving photo,

I was trying to get a better profile picture taken and Leif decided he needed to join the picture… much happier without the gorgeous cozy sweater…

But I sure appreciate my brother-in-law trying to get a decent picture of me. I am not the most photogenic person around… I definitely prefer to be behind the camera.

And after the “shoot”…

This was our first real family picture since our three year old has been around… isn’t that terrible!! Do you have any great tips for getting kids to participate in a “photo shoot”??

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

    1. Hi Jenna!! The matching sweaters lasted for all of ten minutes… my oldest son couldn’t stand his. Too bad, it is such a cute sweater. I guess I could resort to bribery to get him to wear it again but I doubt that even that would work. Thanks for your super sweet comments, totally made my day!!

    1. Aw thanks Abby. Too bad they refuse to wear then unless under direct instructions to keep them on for photos. They came flying off immediately after. So sad.

    1. LOL Kelly, it is certainly tricky to get a decent family picture. A couple more years maybe??? But I love the honestly of the picks now – that is the reality of those two! Might as well remember it how it really was, because they are pretty fun!

  6. Love your pictures!! They came out great. I think the tongue sticking out is perfect 🙂 And your view is ah-mazing!!! Looks like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  8. Krista, terrific photos all around. Love the view you have. Oh, that little tongue will be the talk for decades…really cuter as the years pass. Thanks for sharing them….even the ones you didn’t see as great…they are! And the green pumpkin is perfect for your tablescape.

  9. Krista you are indeed photogenic – oh, your glorious red hair 🙂 Gorgeous shots and your table looks so inviting. Beautiful weather too by the looks of it. When my 11 year old was younger (I have to admit he loved posing for photos!), I used to give him things to hold like a fave toy and I used to get some amazing happy and natural shots. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you sooo much for your super kind words Petra!! It was an incredible sunny Thanksgiving – two years in a row we have had gorgeous weather! Great tips about the photos, I obviously need to figure something out!! lol:)

  10. Happy Thanksgiving to you! Your table looked fabulous! Of course the view helps too. Your children are so alike they look like twins. Just precious!

We had our big dinner on Saturday with a stuffed salmon as the star since many in the family are vegetarian. I got to spend the day yesterday trying out your chalk paint technique on my dining table. I am really happy with the results and plan to do several more pieces in the house.

    1. Thank you! It was a fabulous holiday- the boys are almost three years apart but there certainly is a strong resemblance:) I would love salmon for Thanksgiving- not a huge fan of turkey and October often has crisp, sunny enough days that a summery fare of salmon would be perfect! So glad to hear that the chalk paint worked out for you… I still have to get my dining chairs finished!!
