4F Craftin’: How To Customize a Glass Cutting Board

I will show you how to customize a glass cutting board for a unique look!

Have you ever had one of those major OOPS moments? Like when you let the eggs boil to the point of near combustion and then when the smoke alarm goes off you remember them and run and grab them off the stove but your hand burns and you drop the hot pot onto your laminate countertop and it permanently scars said countertop? Like one of those moments?  Well sometimes those moments may lead us to despair but other times they can bring out our ingenuity and craftiness. It is always better to try to take the latter route. My major OOPS moment led me to craft up a nice little cover for the scarred burnt countertop in the form of a glass cutting board. Definitely a DIY 4F craft (fab, fast, functional and frugal)!

To get started, you will need:

  • a glass cutting board (you may even be able to find one at a thrift store)
  • pretty paper (or possibly fabric) of your choice – I used apple themed scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge and a (foam) brush
  • scissors

Four pictures of the glass cutting board tutorial.

  1. Begin by laying your cutting board on top of your paper and tracing the shape.
  2. Then cut the paper to the dimensions of the cutting board.
  3. Put a good thick layer of Mod Podge on the back of the glass cutting board.
  4. Apply your paper, and press it down to gently. Continue to press down gently working from the center out to push out any trapped air bubbles. Smaller bubbles won’t show through if your glass cutting board has a bubbly texture as mine does.
  5. Find something else to do for a couple of hours while you let it dry thoroughly.
  6. Apply a nice thick coat of Mod Podge on the back of the scrapbook paper and let it dry.
  7. Repeat one or two more times to REALLY seal the back.

Ta da! Enjoy! Cut to your hearts content! But don’t actually cut real hearts (or other raw meat for that matter). I would suggest that you only use it for things that need a simple soap and water surface clean. Not sure that the Mod Podge sealer could handle a FULL submersion wash! And I don’t suggest the dishwasher!

Happy cutting; and remember, my housie friends, HOME wasn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey!

  1. Hi Krista,
What a wonderful site! I found you through a google search for decorating a glass cutting board. I was thinking of doing some very similar to this, but I have no experience with Modge Podge. I looked at some today and there are WAY more types than I expected. Which type of Modge Podge would you suggest for this project? Or a project where I would use removable wall decals on the back of the cutting board.
    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Patty, I just used regular Mod Podge for mine – it provided a good seal. I haven’t heard about using removable wall decals- but if you do it would be a good idea to seal them on with something like Mod Podge so they don’t peel off with washing. Good luck with your project!

  2. Wow! That’s beautiful. It’s a very great idea. Though, precautions and proper materials to avoid lacerations from the glass should be observed when doing it. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this. Great job!

    1. Thanks Judy! The glass cutting board was a premade cutting board so it did not have any sharp edges to deal with, so it was safe. Thanks for reading!
